The Lizardman team has a lot going
for it on paper: combining impressive
physical qualities with players who
complement each other’s skills.
However, it’s never that simple in
Blood Bowl and a Lizardmen coach
should be aware that although the team
appears to be set up to win from the get
go, it still requires careful planning and a
sound strategy to make the most of its
potential. Those impressive benefits the
players have in some areas, mask some
serious shortfalls in others. What’s more,
the strength that the larger Lizardmen such
as Saurus and Kroxigor make so good a use
of can actually work against them. A good
opponent will always try to take advantage
of this.

Although your first matches may seem easy with this powerful, mobile team, things will be
different when you confront teams with a little more experience. A Human Lineman who has been
given additional agility skills, Dodge for example, will manage to break through your line of Saurus
and could wreak havoc upon your Skinks. When it comes to playing against Dwarfs who have
Block skills and later perhaps Mighty Blow, you may find your Saurus on the floor and several
Skinks out for the count! Unfortunately, there is no easy solution here. Getting a Saurus to earn
enough experience points to buy them a useful skill will prove extremely difficult so choose
wisely should the opportunity arise.
The best thing to do in the meantime is let your Saurus hit anything that comes within reach
because in combat he will more than likely have the advantage of two Block dice instead of one.
So give it a go, because with having an Armour value of 9, you probably aren’t risking as much
as the other guy. If possible, take out as many players with lighter Armour values (7) first, so
there’s more squares for your Skinks to move into unmolested, and go to town if playing against
Goblins – the world is a much better place without them!

These have a Movement value of 8 and the skills Dodge and Stunty. They are experts at weaving
around enemy players to score a touchdown. However, you pay for this since they only have a
Strength value of 2 and are therefore unlikely to last long against most players. Skinks are not built
to hold the line, but that’s why there are Saurus in the team. Forget about
blocking with them and concentrate on running up the pitch whilst avoiding
anything likely to take them out.
To counter the Skink’s lack of strength, Lizardmen coaches naturally
focus their defence strategy on the Saurus. If you’re not careful
though, the slower Saurus will be left behind as the faster teams
such as Wood Elves and Skaven dash past them down the pitch.
You’ll need to find a balance between having enough Skinks to
score touchdowns and enough Saurus in the right place to
support this. Once you learn how to avoid confrontations
between your Skinks and other players, and can keep them in
the game for as long as possible, you’ll start to find out just how
great they can be.

This is quite an impressive beast, with a Strength value of 4, Armour 9 and a healthy Movement value
of 6. Unfortunately, nothing is perfect, and Saurus have a major handicap in that they lack the Block
skill. Most teams have a few defensive players with Block, so chances are if a Saurus is outnumbered
during a Block, he’ll be knocked down… But that’s not too bad since,
thanks to his Strength value of 4, this means he needs to be ganged
up on by the opponent, taking up more of their resources,
allowing the Skinks to zip through the gaps.

Being fast and powerful, a Kroxigor is the kind of Big Guy any coach
will love having in his team. His Armour value of 9 almost
guarantees he can take on most of what he’s dealt and his
Prehensile Tail is great for tripping up players who come his
way. The Kroxigor is ideal for supporting the Saurus and a
pack of them grouped around the Kroxigor is a lot for
opposing players to take on, especially for the weaker
teams. As you’ll have sacrificed the opportunity to pick up
some extra Skinks to buy him, you’ll need to adapt how you
move your defence line to compensate. Instead of it
remaining relatively static in the centre of the pitch, push it
forward when you have the ball, protecting your remaining
Skinks until the time is right to send them dashing off to score a
touchdown.
