Uploadr 3.0

If no one is signed into Uploadr
Click the 'Sign in' button at the top of the screen, and follow the instructions. You will be taken to Flickr.com to authorize your account, and then you can begin using Uploadr.

Signing in or switching users

Just like the first time you used Uploadr on your own computer, when you sign in you'll be asked to give Uploadr permission to access your Flickr photos. You'll grant that permission on Flickr.com, and we'll take you there do it.

If the person is already signed into Uploadr, just click the 'SWITCH USERS' button, then click 'Add new user' in the dialogue box. At this point you'll grant permission for Uploadr to access your Flickr photos.

Once you've given permission, come back to Uploadr and click the 'READY!' button, and get busy uploading.

When you are finished, you might want to remove yourself as a user. To do this, click the 'SWITCH USERS' button. Select your profile from the pulldown menu, and click 'Remove selected user', then click OK. All done!

You can either drag and drop a photo from a folder on your computer into the white area of the Uploadr screen or click the '+' button to browse for the photos you want to upload.

When you've chosen the photos you want to send to Flickr, click the Upload button. (You can also choose tags for the photos, set their privacy, resize them, and add them to a set before you upload them.)

If you want to change different settings based on content filters on an image, right click the thumbnail and you will see a context menu to make your choice. You can also change the settings on all the images selected for a batch upload by clicking the settings button (it's the one furthest right on the row of buttons). Select the session defaults on the pop-up window that appears and upload!

Note made on June 12, 2007: We've almost finished getting translated versions of the Windows Uploadr for all the languages we offer - only Korean and Traditional Chinese to go! They'll be ready soon.

First, install the Uploadr program on to your computer. Go to the Tools page, and download Uploadr for Windows. Once it's downloaded, double-click it to install the program.

Next, connect Uploadr to your Flickr account. When you open Uploadr for the first time, you'll be asked to authorize Uploadr to connect to flickr.com. Just follow the bouncing ball, making sure you're logged in at flickr.com so Uploadr knows who you are.

Note made on June 12, 2007: Apologies, but the Mac Uploadr is only available in English at the moment. We're working to have it translated though, and it will be available soon.

First, make sure you have the latest version from the Tools page. Now, double-click the file you downloaded and put the application into your Applications folder/directory. Open Uploadr and you will be asked to authenticate Uploadr to access your Flickr account. Follow the instructions, making sure you are logged into Flickr at the same time, so Uploadr knows who you are.

After installing Uploadr, you choose the method to get your photos into the Uploadr window. You can either drag and drop them in the Photos pane or click the '+' button to select them individually.

When you have a few photos there, click the Upload button to send them to Flickr. You can add tags, set their privacy, and assign them to a photoset, individually or in a batch.

If you want to change different settings based on content filters on a particular image you are uploading, highlight the image in Uploadr, and select the desired choice from the options presented below the 'Privacy' setting. Do you want to change all the options for a whole batch? Easy! Select the 'Batch' tab and you have the same options there.

When some users install Uploadr, instead of opening the browser window to Flickr for authorization, Uploadr shows the folder where it is located on the computer. If this happens, your computer is not opening a web browser correctly.

In that case, close Uploadr. Then make sure a default web browser is listed on your computer.

If you usually use Internet Explorer, do this:

  1. Click the Windows Start button and select Settings > Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, double-click Internet Options.
  3. In the Internet Properties dialog box, click the Programs tab.
  4. Make sure Internet Explorer is selected as your default web browser.

Note: If you are using Microsoft Vista, you get to that dialog window slightly differently:
Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options > Programs

Now restart Uploadr and try to authorize. If it did not work, download a second browser like Mozilla Firefox and install it in order to reset Windows to use a default browser. During installation, make sure you select Firefox as your default browser. Start Uploadr again to authorize.

You can reset your default browser to Internet Explorer following the instructions above if you want.

I finished the upload, but Windows Uploadr opened a directory. What's up with that?

If you finish an upload and click the button to visit your photos on Flickr, a directory on your computer opens, you may need to "teach" Windows to look for the web browser. It's possible that the association to go to a URL by a web browser is not being recognized.

If this happens, close Uploadr. Now, check to see if there is a default web browser listed on your computer.

Restart Uploadr and try to upload a photo. If it still opens a directory, download a second browser like Mozilla Firefox and install it in order to reset Windows' choice of a default browser. During installation, make sure you select Firefox as your default browser. Try another photo to upload.

You can reset your default browser to Internet Explorer following the instructions above if you want.

How do I use Uploadr on someone else's computer?

To use Uploadr on a computer other than your own, add another profile in the Uploadr preferences.

First, make sure you are signed in to Flickr. Next, open Uploadr and add the profile: On the Mac, click the Switch User button. On Windows, click the little switch icon in Uploadr. In the window that opens, click "Add a new profile." You'll go to Flickr.com to confirm you want to authorize Uploadr on that computer for your account. Now you're ready to upload.

When you are done uploading, be sure to remove your user authorization on Uploadr for that computer if you do not plan to use it again. To do this, return to the Uploadr preferences and delete your user name from the list. And remember: Completely sign out of Flickr and Yahoo! when you are not using your own computer.

Help! I am having trouble uploading?!

If your upload is slower than normal, fails to connect, or only partial images are displayed, there may be a network issue on a point somewhere between your computer and Flickr. Sometimes these problems are ISP-related and sometimes might be specific to your local computer/network setup. (And most of the time, it's temporary. :-) If you only tried uploading with Uploadr, try using the web form to compare results or one of the other upload tools. If you cannot upload with any of them, it's likely a network issue that will affect any upload.

Some quick suggestions:

   * Use both the web upload page and Uploadr. Does the upload fail for one or both?
   * Briefly turn off the power to any broadband modems and routers to reset the network connection.
   * If you connect wirelessly, move your computer closer to the wireless access point, or 'plug in'.
   * Temporarily turn off any antivirus or firewall software and try an upload. If the upload is successful, look to see if you can add Uploadr to an exceptions list of applications that can access the Internet.
   * If you are a regular Firefox user on Windows, make sure Internet Explorer is not set to "Work Offline" mode (this only applies to older versions- make sure you have the latest version).

If you are networked through a router that is plugged into a home broadband modem, unplug the router and connect your computer directly into the modem itself. If the connection is now open, then the router could be slowing or blocking the connection and you may need to consult your manual for configuration options. Sometimes setting to a slightly lower MTU value or matching it to the value used by your ISP helps. (Some users report problems with specific network hardware in our Forums. A search there might reveal one.)

If you have tried all of these suggestions and you still can't upload, please copy and paste the bullet points into your help email and let us know what happened when you tried each one. (without this specific info it is very hard to troubleshoot upload issues :)
